One of the greatest things to happen to the lighting industry in recent years is LED lights. These are bulbs that have been designed as an inexpensive alternative to traditional lighting that only requires a fraction of the power to operate and has a durability that is unprecedented. There are some people who do not understand the over all benefits that these lights have and often sticker shock plays a big factor in their purchasing decisions. Let’s put a little perspective on the actual cost and benefits regarding these remarkable bulbs.

To begin with LED lights have been around for quite some time now. The first bulbs were introduced in the early 1960s when engineers were in need of an energy efficient low heat bulb they crafted the LED as a viable alternative to the traditional incandescent bulb. The result was that and more.

To begin with, LED bulbs have an outstanding lifespan. To put this into full context consider the incandescent bulb. This is crafted utilizing a filament which has been an effective method to light homes for many years. The average bulb lasts approximately 750 hours, or for about a month running without being turned off. The more efficient replacement for some time was the compact fluorescent, which did rate much better. This bulb had a lifespan of approximately 10,000 hours, which is amazing in comparison lasting for over a year of non stop use. However, when set up against LED Christmas lights none of these bulbs can compare. LED lights have a standard lifespan of approximately 100,000 hours. That is the equivalent of approximately 11 and a half years running without turning the light off.

The initial cost is what often turns people away, with the average price of LED lights being around $20 compared to the $1.99 of the incandescent bulb. However if you look at the overall cost to have enough incandescent bulbs to last the 11 and a half years you will be spending over $250 in bulbs. It may seem like a large initial investment, but the long term savings will add up. Not just with purchasing, but also every month with energy expenses. LED lights use only a small fraction of the energy compared to traditional lighting. If you compare a 40 watt bulb, which is sufficient to read by, to LED lights, you would only need to use 1.5 watts of power for these amazing bulbs.

Over all LED lights are becoming the superior replacements for nearly every bulb on the market and as they do they are changing the face of the industry. Not only are we going to have more capable and cost effective options, but ones that have a surprising amount of ability.
