Firstly solar accent lighting adds a decorative touch to your garden. These lights can be gentle and some of them may be colored these days, or flicker to emulate a candle. Some will even be designed to look like rocks and have a novelty value. They will be used to light up a flower bed or water feature in your garden, for example, or to mark a hazard like a big rock or pond. Because of their low light requirement – normally only needing to glow rather than to shine – they have low power needs and can sometimes glow for several nights off a single charge. They will charge well even on cloudy days or in shaded areas. These are often the cheapest solar lights and you don’t need to think too long and hard about these – just get a set that gives you the mood and style you are after, has a hardy case that can stand up to the weather conditions and can be fixed easily into the ground .
Solar path lights are the second type. These will light up walkways and driveways as well as perimeters and pathways on your property. They provide a safety element that the accent lights don’t always provide – highlighting icy conditions or hazards when reversing the car for example. These will usually come with ground stakes, flange mounts or hanging hooks to expand the options of where to place them and most are designed to angle their light downwards. While they are designed to power on automatically at dusk, when the light sensor detects fading light, many will have an on/off switch that allows you to conserve power. They are great for providing the look that someone is home – which can be a security benefit when you are away. These are mid-range lights that will need to be more powerful than accent lighting but won’t need the extra power of some spotlights or task lights.
Solar task lights are usually the highest grade of solar light, requiring the brightest and the longest-lasting capacity. This also makes them the most expensive. A high-quality, well-made one may be able to produce a light equivalent to around a 40-watt incandescent bulb for 10-12 hours and will use the set up of larger separate solar panel and multiple LEDs described earlier. It will also have a more robust and harder-wearing feel to it than some of the other lights. It may also have a smart sensor system, if being used for security purposes, whereby it will only switch itself on when it detects motion.
